Compensating for National Socialist Injustice and Indemnifying Jewish Victims

Author

  • Dirk Roland Haupt

Editor

  • Faina Kukliansky
  • Andrew Eliot Baker

Summary, in English

The contribution contains a comprehensive presentation of the legal regulations for the indemnification of National Socialist injustice—notably the restitution of property of Jewish victims of the Holocaust—, using the example of the law of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is also devoted to the contextualization of indemnification and reparation policy in terms of international law, public law and contemporary history and elaborates the criteria explaining the extent to which this compensation model sets a precedent for a universalization of indemnification of persecution and extermination and the boundaries where it will, and continuously must, remain limited to the unprecedented case of the Holocaust of the Jewish nation.
