Martin Sunnqvist is coordinator for a new Pufendorf Advanced Study Group (ASG) at the Pufendorf Institute with the title Oaths and Courts – from Forum to the Future.

This Advanced Study Group centres around the two keywords “Oaths” and “Courts”, and particularly the interaction between them. The independence and impartiality of judges, and the ambition to find the truth through judicial proceedings, have been defined by different types of oaths from Antiquity and onwards. The researchers will analyse the history of oaths and of independence and impartiality, and the substantive content of the oaths. The ASG also discusses what the standards of independence and impartiality mean when AI becomes part of decision-making.

The ASG is active from September 2024 to June 2025.
